Dr. Sonia Ahn Yuen is an ophthalmic surgeon with subspecialty expertise in oculoplastics and paediatric ophthalmology, in addition to
general ophthalmology.
Since joining the Terrace Eye Centre in 2008, she has continuously endeavoured to remain current, specifically in regard to surgical expertise and more broadly in regard to professional contribution locally and abroad. Dr Yuen recently attended the Oculoplastic Cadaveric Dissection Workshop held in Singapore. The emphasis in oculoplastics is to ensure the best surgical outcome that would preserve and restore boththe function, physical integrity and cosmesis of ocular structures. The focus of the workshop was to enhance the surgical outcome for orbital and periorbital conditions through the best surgical approach that would yield optimal exposure and management while minimizing intraoperative and postoperative risks, such as scarring.
As a visiting consultant at both the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Dr Yuen has endeavoured, over the years, to contribute to patient care in the community at large and to teach and train medical students and registrars, our future caretakers. More broadly in the international domain, Dr Yuen has continued to maintain a Specialty Board certification with the American Board of Ophthalmology, in addition to being a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO). Dr Yuen’s international work includes her participation as an invited oculoplastics surgeon for ORBIS, a non-profit international organization also known as The Flying Eye Hospital. In addition to the surgical repairs of complex paediatric oculoplastics conditions in Vietnam, the focus of Dr Yuen’s work was to train the local ophthalmic surgeons towards self-sufficiency. The aim of both these community-based and international work is to continue to learn, to teach and to contribute toward best patient care possible.
